Having read that aspergers may be linked to ADHD, I thought *Well, people with ADHD are generally told to not eat refined sugar and such foods like chocolate etc, maybe that can help me?*

Well, after 3 days I still have aspie issues but gosh....the rage is about 33% less! And for me thats a real difference. Today I ate a creme egg though (at 2pm) and when I got home mother could instantly tell i had eaten sugar, and i had been in a foul mood since about half a minute after eating it! I think its worth me giving up sugar as it seems to have a heck of an impact on my behaviour/mood/anger.

Just my experience.

A Julie topic for sure. She calls sugar "white death".

I heard my name and nom de plume being mentioned. \:\)

Sorry, don't have time for my "soapbox" anymore. But it's really good that you noticed the difference sugar can make in you Emily. For some it is even more pronounced. Congratulations and keep up the "cleaner" living.

I've found I have a huge improvement if I don't eat sugar, but there's a strong family history of diabetes. I wonder if the people with AS who notice such big differences are simply reacting more strongly than NTs who have (common?) blood-sugar problems? In our society it seems like there are so many people who go on to develope diabetes.

Is this the "soapbox" you were mentioning? http://www.xmission.com/~winter/ubb/ultimatebb.php?/topic/1/2592.html#000000

One of the many X.

MaggiGabe,

The connection between AS and developing diabetes is very real because such a huge majority of people on the spectrum have metabolic issues, hence many food intolerances. It's an enormous domino effect involving many systems, when one system is adversely effected, others will be also.

I'm just so thrilled we found all of the metabolic issues and vitamin and mineral deficiencies my son has. All of those distressing problems of anxiety, sleep disturbances, meltdowns, sensory issues, etc are all gone and he doesn't need ANY medication.

He has also been able to reduce his supplement needs by half since his systems are now functioning much better on their own. Soon, he will be down to one or two supplements a day.

My understanding is that aspergers is completely unrelated to ADHD, but its symptoms can be mistaken for ADD or ADHD. When I was in elementary school I was tested for ADD and ADHD and the results were so counter to a child suffering from either. Aspegers is actually the opposite of ADHD / ADD in a lot of ways; ADHD causes a difficulty maintaining focus, whereas aspergers causes someone to intensely focus on particular things. As a result, they don't have much patience for things that don't hold their interests, and can sometimes be confused for ADHD.

This said, I both have a sweet tooth and am a caffine addict. I do notice that some of my aspergers symptoms are a little worse (typically the more compulsive ones) when I've had more caffine than usual, or just after having caffine. I also tend to have more caffine when I'm stressed, which is probably a self-destructive behavior since my aspergers symptoms often cause me stress.
