Although it always bothers me when the first post from someone is touting their own site, at first glance at least, this one looks to be a true help site, and not a grab for money. There are a lot of pages within it, and it looks like it is expanding. Check it out, and if you find a problem with it, please let me know. We don't want to link to a site that has 'issues'.

Hi there Em. One thing many of us aspies, on this forum at least, don't do is feel that we 'suffer from the disorder.' In fact, many of us feel it is not really a disorder at all, just like being left handed is not a disorder. Yes, there is a difference in us, but by far the greatest problems are caused not by AS as much as the expectation of 'normal' society that everyone behave in the same way. Often it is the 'fitting in' that is the problem, not the AS itself. I suspect you already know that, but have chosen to use language that appeals to the vast masses. Just be sure you don't alienate the very people you are trying to serve. \:\)

Yeah, lefty and AS here, and "suffer" is not at all the word I'd use.

Speak for yourself, there.

But I, too, will assume it was just a throwaway line, and not hold you to it.

Hate to be contrary right off the bat but aspergers does not usually require full time care. Have you had violent episodes? I note that you say you MAY suffer from the disorder. That leads me to believe you have not been diagnosed with AS, is this a fair assumption? Were you diagnosed with other disorders? And lastly, are the over violent autistics in your residential home diagnosed with aspergers? I have studied AS for about 9 years and have a son with AS and this seems out of character to me. Please tell us more about yourself.

Linda

PS The first thing I notice when I go to this site is a plug for a book written by Emma..........

From the little I've seen so far of Em's history, I suspect that maybe the problem is over sensitivity to something(s) and a violent meltdown. I've had them myself (not often) but if I'd done damage or hurt, I might be in a similar situation, in a home with others who are violent. The issue, if that is the case, is more to do with recognizing the triggers and teaching coping, then getting on with life. However, if the very place you're in is causing those same triggering issues, it's a vicious circle.
